Aplocheilidae
English version Deutsche Version
Genera: ~ 15
Species: ~ 310
The family is represented on each continent with the exception of Australasia, and usually consists of small fishes of 5-8 cm. Only a few species grow larger than 10 cm. Few killies are suited to live in a community aquarium and show their natural behavior only in a single species tank. The Killifishes' eggs need a longer incubation period to develop.

Adamas cf. formosus
Starhead killi
~ 3 cm
These fishes should be kept in small species tanks filled with moderately acidic and soft water. Starhead killies prefer rather cooler water with temperatures around 22 degrees centigrade. Their diet should consist, above all, of live food taking the small size of the fish into account.

Adamas cf. formosus
Aphyoplatys duboisi
Dubois' Panchax
3,5 cm
Aphyoplatys are not particularly suited to a communal life with other fishes, as they are not forceful enough. However, the males can behave quite aggressively towards each other.

Aphyoplatys duboisi
Aphyosemion elegans
Elegant killi
~ 5 cm
The Aphyosemion elegans group consists of a number of small, slim Killifishes, some of which have clearly elongated fins, to date these have been found in Gabon, the Central African Republic and the Congos.

Aphyosemion elegans
Aphyosemion lamberti
-
~ 5 cm
It is considered the simplest species, recommended for beginners, care like other A.elegans relatives: in community with small Panchaxs or Characins quite possible, no special requirements regarding water conditions, however it should be clean.

Aplocheilus kirchmayeri
Aplocheilus parvus
Dwarf panchax
1,5 bis 2,5 cm
A small, A. blockii like species which can be kept together with small-fishes, e.g. Microrasbora. Perhaps a suspecies of A.blockii. More info coming soon.

Aplocheilus parvus
Chromaphyosemion alpha
-
~ 5 cm
All species of genus Chromaphyosemion are suitable for miniature aquariums with the exception of C. riggenbachi. Naturally, one or other male could grow to more than 5cm. Because of the male aggressiveness I recommend adding only one or three of them.

Chromaphyosemion alpha
Chromaphyosemion bitaeniatum
Two-striped Aphyosemion
< 4 cm
I think the species C. kouamense and C. bitaeniatum are particularly suitable for mini-tanks. They scarcely grow larger than 4cm, and are quite peaceful, so that adding 6 fish to a well set up tank (20-25l) promises success.

Chromaphyosemion bitaeniatum
Chromaphyosemion kouamense
-
< 4 cm
I only use 10 L tanks for breeding or keeping a trio. Tanks with an approx. size of 20 - 25 L seem to be more suitable, 3 pairs or trios could be kept well here.

Chromaphyosemion kouamense
Diapteron abacinum
-
~ 3,5 cm
Killies of genus Diapteron reach about 4-5 cm size. Because of their great agressiveness this genus' species could not be kept permanently in small tanks.

Diapteron abacinum
Epiplatys chaperi samborskii
Toothed carp
~ 5 cm
Like the nominotypical taxon, not difficult to keep and breed. So far, this species has been found only in Tarkwa, where Christoph Samborski originally caught and made this species available to the hobby aquarist.

Epiplatys chaperi samborskii
Epiplatys chevalieri
Chevalier's epiplatys
~ 5 cm
A somewhat shy and sensitive species, however, easily kept with some not too rough tankmates - e.g. Aphyosemion elegans and relatives.
Heinz Ott

Epiplatys chevalieri
Epiplatys dageti dageti
Redchin panchax
4 bis 5 cm
The type from Ghana is easy to keep and despite its relatively small size - mine are ~ 4 cm - they stand up well to other, even larger Killifishes. Because E. dageti dageti is less attractive than E. d. monroviae, it is hardly ever available to aquaristics.
Heinz Ott
heinzDOTottATschlaweDOTde
Epiplatys dageti dageti
Epiplatys dageti monroviae
-
~ 5 cm
One of the easiest to keep Killifishes, well suitable for the community aquarium, breeding is simple as well. Young fish can be found regularly in the trade.
Heinz Ott
heinzDOTottATschlaweDOTde
Epiplatys dageti monroviae
Epiplatys spilargyreius
-
4,5 bis 5,5 cm
As ever - due to it's enormous area of occurance - commercial imports and catches by aquarists. The species withsatnds permanent temperatures of 30 °C, at high temperatures (> 28°C) it is clearly more colourful.
Heinz Ott
heinzDOTottATschlaweDOTde
Epiplatys spilargyreius
Fundulopanchax cinnamomeum
Cinnamon Killi
> 5 cm
Most Killies of the genus Fundulopanchax reach about 5-8cm. Because of their aggressiveness, the smaller species of this genus cannot be kept in small tanks.

Fundulopanchax cinnamomeum
Fundulosoma thierryi
Togo Killifish
3 cm
Regarded as a link between the representatives of the former general-genus Aphyosemion and Nothobranchius. Because of their sensitivity and rarity, Togo Killifish should be kept in a species tank! Aquariums starting at 40cm side length are sufficiant for keeping.

Fundulosoma thierryi
Nothobranchius species
Nothobranch
3,5 to 10 cm
I keep the smaller Nothobranchius species in breeding tanks of 30x20x20cm size (tap water pH 7.8, GH 22 and KH 18). These water specifications have emerged as optimal for most species. I feed (almost) exclusively frozen red mosquito larvae.
Alexander Dorn
webmasterATnothobranchiusDOTde
Nothobranchius rachovii
Nothobranchius annectens
-
4,5 cm
Due to the small adult size of this species, aquariums of 10 - 15 litres are sufficient for keeping and breeding one or two trios. Nothobranchius annectens is a relatively peaceful Killi, I would recommend keeping it in a species tank.
Alexander Dorn
webmasterATnothobranchiusDOTde
Nothobranchius annectens
Nothobranchius eggersi
Egger's nothobranch
4 bis 5 cm
Egger´s nothobranch is one of the most popular Nothobranchius species of all time, probably due to its unusual coloredness and, because it is relatively unproblematic to keep and breed. Two trios can be kept and bred in a species tank 30x20x20cm.
Alexander Dorn
webmasterATnothobranchiusDOTde
Nothobranchius eggersi
Nothobranchius foerschi
Foersch´s nothobranch
~ 5 cm
Foersch´s nothobranch is also suitable for the community with other peaceful fishes. Even a "Notho" beginner will seldom experience any problems. However, this species turns out to be unusually susceptible to "Oodinium".
Alexander Dorn
webmasterATnothobranchiusDOTde
Nothobranchius foerschi
Nothobranchius fuscotaeniatus
-
4,5 cm
Fish of this species have turned out to reach an age of more than two years. You should never keep fish of this species in community tanks; best to keep this nothobranch in small groups in a well planted species tank with a minimum of 50cm side length.
Alexander Dorn
webmasterATnothobranchiusDOTde
Nothobranchius fuscotaeniatus
Nothobranchius korthausae
-
4 bis 5 cm
Similar needs like most of the other species of the genus. Even smaller aquariums (25l) are suitable for keeping, equipped either without substrate or with sand (recommended). Altogether, I would regard it as one of the more peaceful nothobranch.
Alexander Dorn
webmasterATnothobranchiusDOTde
Nothobranchius korthausae
Nothobranchius palmqvisti
Palmqvist´s nothobranch
5 cm
Nothobranchius palmqvisti is an ideal fish for Nothobranchius beginners, but even experienced keepers are fascinated by its attractive colours. Keeping is even possible in small aquariums (25l), either without substrate or with sand.
Alexander Dorn
webmasterATnothobranchiusDOTde
Nothobranchius palmqvisti
Nothobranchius patrizii
Blue notho
5 cm
With a little luck you can get this species even from an aquarium specialty store. Besides being robust, this nothobranch also has very attractive colouring. An aquarium of 15-20 litres is sufficient for this fish, which grows to around 5cm.
Alexander Dorn

Nothobranchius patrizii
Pseudepiplatys annulatus
Banded panchax
4 cm
Keeping in a species tank with a lot of javamoss and floating plants is not difficult. The fry would not be eaten by the parents, but possibly by its brothers or sisters.
